He waits there by the doorway, dirty feet shuffling on the ground
People look the other way and seem to take the longer way around
He wears too many layers and carries everything he owns
A pack of rollie cigarettes, a radio with the battery run down

Once somebody's father but you know how relationships break down
He bummed around for 20 years, the promise of a job in each new town
But nothing ever came of those then he found drinking stopped the shame
Blocked out all the memories, the good, the bad 'til every day's the same

Lives forsaken, spirits breaking, living on the street
Yes he's got his freedom but there's not enough to eat
Wearing rags, from brown paper bags he's drinking what he can
There's nothing left of him but the shadow of a man

Someone tossed some coins to him they're tallied up, added to the rest
This long winter's day isn't panning out to be one of his best
Maybe for tonight he'll get a meal and sleep inside the dorm
At least there'd be some company, blankets to keep him nice and warm
